The starting point for all your digital camera information
This portable and compact camera is indeed very small. It seems to have been designed for travelers, as it fits nicely into your pocket, unless more bulky digital cameras.
It features a great automatic cover for the lens, eliminating the need to cover the lens yourself or the worries of losing a plastic cover. It also adds-up to speed when preparing the camera for a shoot.
The Nikon Coolpix 7900 has a good 3x, 7.8mm to 23.4mm (equivalent to a 38mm -114mm lens on a 35mm camera) optical zoom lens with extra-low dispersion grass, a technology used by Nikon to improve image quality. A 7.1-megapixel CCD makes the perfect companion for the lens, allowing you to capture really high quality pictures.
Some other good features of the 7900 are the 2” LCD monitor screen an incredibly accurate optical viewfinder.
The camera offers the possibility of turning the LCD monitor screen on or off, thus allowing you to save battery power and, of course, extending your camera’s autonomy.
The lens’ maximum apertures range from f/2.8 to f/4.9, depending of course on the zoom setting. The Autofocus feature is contrast-detection based, and it can be used to focus at distances ranging from 30cm (in normal mode) to infinity.
While in Macro mode, the Coolpix 7900 camera is capable to focus as close as 4cm (1.6 inches) and then switches to the continuous Autofocus mode, constantly focusing until the Shutter button is half pressed. Also, the camera indicates when you are within optimal autofocus range, turning green the zoom indicator at the top of the LCD screen.
This camera is very comfortable to use, although its tiny size makes you a “wrist strap addict”. Camera’s response is indeed quite fast, featuring low startup delay and not so bad shutter speeds. These speeds may range from 1/2000 of a second up to four seconds. When “Red eye reduction” is turned on, saving a picture may take pretty much time. This is because Nikon does not only use the typical pre-flash red eye reduction, but it actually includes the software in the 7900 that searches for red eye effect and corrects them. The results achieved by this software, however, are good enough to be worth a little wait.
The Nikon Coolpix 7900 offers six preset modes of white balance adjustment, including a custom setting to set the color balance manually.
Time of exposure is determined by a 256 – segment matrix metering system, which evaluates contrast and brightness across the frame to pick the optimal exposure.
Light sensitivity ranges from ISO 50 to ISO 400, to let you get a good shot under different environmental conditions.
The Coolpix 7900 also features a nice 4X digital zoom, which may be combined with the 3X optical zoom lens described above for a good 12X zooming.
The 7.1-megapixel CCD produces high resolution, high quality images, which may be printed up to a size of 11 x 17 inches without significant detail loss.
This Nikon camera turns out to be a great compact digital camera, especially for beginners or intermediate users, who will just fall in love with both the image quality and the camera’s appearance. However, more experienced users may need more control over features like shutter speed and others, and this camera may just not suit them the way they want.
